“It’s for work and you know it,” Oliver sighed as Clark turned his back, staring out of the glass panes in the penthouse, “You could come you know.”
“What about Lois?” Clark said, folding his arms.
“You could come back for her too.”
“What? I’m sick of that fact I have to leave both of you behind.” Oliver sighed, dejectedly as Clark turned around. “It’s not like you couldn’t visit, you just won’t.”
“It’s not like…”
“Like what? Like you’re ashamed of me?” The anger was plain to see in Oliver’s face, “Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
Clark’s eyes darkened with his own anger, he was sick of fighting Ollie on the issue. “Don’t lay this on me. You know I can’t be seen, you know it’s not because I’m ashamed of you, me or Lois.”
“Actions speak louder than words Clark and you’re always silent.”
Clark shook his head in denial as he spoke, “I’m sorry I can’t do this, I can’t be an open book.”
“Clark.” Oliver tilted his head, his face frowning in pain and confusion.
It was always worse when Ollie left.
But he’ll come back, they’ll make up and go back to the lies until he left again. It was far from what either of them wanted but they’re weak. Secrets and lies are like breathing to them and with experience the pain that came with lies now became a dull edge. Something you live with because you have to, because the alternative is something that much worse.
